It started a couple years ago, when a friend of mine showed me some of Deadmau5's popular songs. Initially, I wrote it off as generic dance music. I had always been a big fan of hard rock, bands like Rise Against and Seether. But last year, I started listening to Feed Me, a British house and dubstep producer. Something about the unique, almost visceral sounds that he created was really intriguing to me. Soon after that, I discovered artists such as Zedd, Porter Robinson, and Madeon, who are three young house producers whose popularity is growing directly with that of the genre. All of them have managed to create their own unique sounds, making catchy yet complex songs that were very new to me.
I've never been much of a party person, and am definitely not into the club and dance scene that is often associated with EDM. In my opinion, the ability of house producers to create songs that are both catchy and complex makes the genre great. The layers of sounds that go into creating a song is hard understand. The melody line has to be backed up with many other parts to create the final product. The genre is relatively new, at least on a more mainstream level, and so it doesn't feel like everything has been done before, as opposed to a much older genre like rock. House producers aren't confined by creating one distinct sound, which is what rock bands often struggle with. For example, Porter Robinson's single "Language" sounds very different from his earlier track "Spitfire". The underlying sounds of synths and other parts that go into the song aren't even that similar. The confines of the abilities of band members or what instruments can be used are removed, making for many more possibilities of sounds to combine to create a song.
Here's hoping that the genre continues to grow in popularity and creativity.
